School Safety Technical Assistance Council begins its work

By Cathy Miller
MSBA Director of Legal & Policy Services and member of the School Safety Technical Assistance Council

The School Safety Technical Assistance Council met for the first time on Tuesday, September 15, 2014.

The meeting included introductions of the members of the Council and the Director of the School Safety Technical Assistance Center, Bill Mack. The Council members present took the oath of office. A review of the Safe and Supportive Schools Act provided the members with background of how the new law came to be passed and the duties of the Council.

Commissioner Cassellius anticipates that subcommittees, in addition to meetings of the full Council, may be needed to accomplish the work. Senator Scott Dibble addressed the Council and thanked them for their time and willingness to do this work. The group had a discussion about the model policy developed by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), because the Council will need to approve the MDE model policy. Since several issues and suggestions were raised, a subcommittee was formed to recommend an amended model Bullying Prohibition Policy to the full Council at its next meeting, which will be November 18 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The subcommittee of volunteers from the Council members has met once and will meet again on October 22 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
