MSBA Voter Guide: Ask the questions now
The primaries are behind us, and now the focus turns to November. This is an important window for school board members to engage with candidates — while they are listening, meeting with voters, and defining the priorities they will take with them into office.
Every election year, MSBA develops a Voter Guide to help school board members engage candidates on the issues that matter most to Minnesota public schools. This year’s guide is ready and includes questions you can use when candidates come to your community, participate in a forum, knock on your door, or ask for your support.
The most important message: don’t wait until January to advocate. By the time legislators arrive at the Capitol, many priorities, promises, and commitments have already been made. The campaign is your opportunity to begin building those relationships and securing commitments on issues important to your students, staff, and taxpayers.
Remember: you may never have a candidate’s ear more than when they are asking for your vote. Use the MSBA Voter Guide. Pick two or three questions that matter most to your district. Ask every candidate the same questions. Listen to their answers — and begin the relationship now.
Advocacy doesn’t start when the Legislature convenes. It starts during the campaign.
