Minnesota Department of Revenue is hosting “Engaging Minnesota to Help Property Taxpayers”

The Minnesota Department of Revenue is holding a series of listening sessions, Engaging Minnesota to Help Property Taxpayers, to hear directly from taxpayers and stakeholders about Minnesota’s property tax system. The goal is to identify ways to make the system more understandable, accessible, accountable, and less costly and burdensome for property taxpayers.

These ongoing sessions run through October 15 and bring different voices into the conversation. Importantly, one of the sessions will focus specifically on local units of government, including school districts.

The Department will use what it hears through these sessions to develop recommendations for reforming Minnesota’s property tax system. That makes it important that the school board perspective is part of the discussion. School boards understand firsthand the relationship between state funding, local levies, voter-approved referendums, property tax pressures, and the services communities expect from their public schools.

We need the school board voice at the table when it is our turn to be heard. If you are interested in participating in the school district/local government discussion, please reach out to MSBA Director of Government Relations Denise Dittrich at ddittrich@mnmsba.org.

Our goal is to identify school board members and district leaders who can help make sure the Department understands the perspective of our public school boards as it develops its recommendations.

Remaining schedule: The Department’s hybrid listening-sessions will run from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, September 15, 2026
  • Thursday, September 24, 2026
  • Thursday, October 15, 2026
