In June, Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius held a meeting to update stakeholders on the state’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan.

During the meeting, MDE shared a document outlining current decisions for the state plan and an outline of the state plan template that will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education.

The full ESSA law will not go into effect until the 2018-2019 school year, but there are a few changes that will start to go into effect in the upcoming 2017-2018 year. For information on these changes, watch MDE’s ESSA transition year e-learning module at

MDE plans to share the draft of the Minnesota ESSA State Plan for public comment, beginning August 1 and going through the end of August. During that time, the plan will be posted on MDE’s ESSA page at

As part of the public comment period, Commissioner Cassellius will be hitting the road in August to hear stakeholders’ thoughts on the state plan draft during a series of regional meetings. Dates, details and RSVP information will be coming soon.
