Each Minnesota K-12 Student has a Trust Fund

The Department of Education released the March endowment payment which gets distributed twice a year to every student enrolled in a public school in the State of Minnesota. This revenue is generated from 2.5 million acres of land, which was granted to the public schools in the MN State Constitution and Enabling Act by our Founding Fathers when MN became a state over 150 years ago. When MN accepted the trust lands (8 million acres at this time) a trust fund (Permanent School Fund) was created and the interest and dividends are distributed to the beneficiaries (public school children of MN). Yes, this is one of the best kept secrets of of school finance: every public school student is the beneficiary of a real, bona fide trust fund. Our Founding Fathers understood the necessity that every student, every generation learn the skills to empower them to achieve their dreams and to ensure a free and educated society. This is an inspiring story – one that needs to be told – over and over.
