On Friday, National School Boards Association (NSBA) Executive Director & CEO Thomas J. Gentzel released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s signing of the FY 2017 Omnibus Bill:

The FY 2017 Omnibus Bill represents a much-needed investment in our country’s economy, global competitiveness, and most important resource, our children.

Previous budget cuts have resulted in increased class sizes, fewer resources to invest in innovative programs and needed services, reduced access to programs for children with special needs, eliminations of summer and after-school programming and more.

The funding increases in this legislation, including special education grants under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Title I, and Impact Aid are critical for America’s public schools to continue to improve and educate a growing and diverse population of students.

NSBA has long advocated for funding that prioritizes education. We thank Congress and the administration for putting students first and supporting school districts and local communities in their efforts to provide America’s public school students with the highest quality education.
