On Thursday, June 23, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Rep. John Kline (R-MN), will hold a hearing entitled, “Next Steps for K-12 Education: Examining Recent Efforts to Implement the Every Student Succeeds Act.” This is the second hearing convened by the Committee to further its ongoing oversight of the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Upon announcing the hearing, Chairman Kline stated: “With the Every Student Succeeds Act, members on both sides of the aisle came together to give control of K-12 education back to state and local leaders. What the department is doing through the rulemaking process to undermine this bipartisan law is deeply concerning. We are determined to hold the administration accountable and make certain the law is implemented in a manner that adheres to the letter and intent of the law. This hearing is a part of that important effort.”

The hearing will provide an opportunity for the committee members to discuss with Secretary John B. King, Jr. not only the department’s implementation efforts, but also the importance of drafting rules, regulations and non-regulatory guidance pursuant to the spirit and letter of the law.
