MSBA at the Capitol — House Republicans propose disappointing budget target for education spending

The House Republican majority unveiled their budget proposal and committee targets for government spending in 2016-17 biennium.

With a $1.8 billion surplus, the GOP’s top budget priority is $2 billion in tax relief. The next highest target is for E-12 education at $156 million in new revenue. They also allocate $100 million to budget reserve.

In contrast, Gov. Mark Dayton proposes to increase E-12 education funding by $694 million for the next biennium. We are still waiting on the Senate majority to release their budget proposal and committee targets.

MSBA’s response in one word: disappointing. The House education target is disappointing to say the least.

As we move through the remaining six weeks of the session, the budget targets will be the centerpiece of discussions and negotiation.
