The House and the Senate set a joint hearing of House Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committees for 3 p.m. Friday, June 5, in Room 200 of the State Office Building.

The joint committee will conduct an informational walk through of and take committee member questions on the following omnibus bills:

  1. Supplemental K-12 Education Appropriations
  2. Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources

The internal mechanics at the Capitol are starting to move — so special session can’t be far away! These two committees are the most powerful committees from each legislative body— they are the last stop for all omnibus finance bills. The reason for a combined meeting is due to limited space as the result of the Capitol construction going on now through 2017 session.

Presently, Gov. Mark Dayton has not called a special session — but the days that are being tossed out for consideration are Saturday, Monday or Tuesday. All legislative members will come back to St. Paul for a vote once a date is set.

The information we are presently hearing is that the additional revenue will increase spending in already established E-12 education programs – like basic per pupil funding, Head Start, School Readiness and Early Childhood scholarships. It is likely that none of the policy provisions in the vetoed bill will be changed during this special session.
