14 Days of Advocacy: Support a REPEAL of the new school board vacancy law

Ready …

TGIF! Thank goodness it’s Friday — one more opportunity to participate in our 14 Days of Advocacy campaign. It’s not too late to communicate the issues and make sure our voice is heard at the state Capitol.

The start of the 2016 legislative session is just a few days away. If we all join together, we have the potential to be incredibly effective advocates.

We are effective because we have power. We have power because there are more than 2,000 school board members across the state. If we continue to build a strong grass-roots advocacy network and system, we will be heard and make a difference for the students in Minnesota’s public schools.

Set …

MSBA urges you to advocate.

Write an email or make a phone call asking your legislator to repeal the new school board vacancy election requirement. Choose one or two ways to advocate and encourage others in your network and community to share, too.

Here are some ideas to include in your correspondence or call regarding the new school board vacancy law:

  • The current law was added to the omnibus bill very late last session and had no legislative language or hearing in either the House or the Senate.
  • The law runs counter to all other election laws governing school boards.
  • There are significant costs associated with mandatory elections and inefficiencies.
